I am interested in changing careers, advice please?

I am qualified as a mental health nurse. I also hate what nursing has become and my real passion has developed and I am stumped about how to get into it at this stage of my life. I am 31 and I really want to work with animal charities or the RSPCA. What direction do you go in when you decide to change careers into something completely unrelated? I have only ever known psychiatry. Any advice would be appreciatedI am interested in changing careers, advice please?
You should talk to a career counselor.

I changed careers when I was 30.

This is a common age to consider a career change.

I went back to school to learn what I needed and took industry certification exams. I got an entry level position and my career took off....because I liked the new career better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Career_Coun

Career Counselling and career coaching are similar in nature to traditional counselling (Kim, Li, Lian, 2002). However, the focus is generally on issues such as career exploration, career change, personal career development and other career related issues (Swanson, 1995). Typically when people come for career counselling they know exactly what they want to get out of the process, but are unsure about how it will work (Galassi, Crace, Martin, James, and Wallace, 1992).

Career counsellors work with people from all walks of life such as adolescents looking to explore career options or with experienced professionals looking for a career change. Career counsellors typically have a background in psychology, vocational psychology, or industrial/organizational psychology (Swanson %26amp; Parcover, 1998).

The approach of career counselling varies by practitioner, but generally they include the completion of one or more assessments (Swanson %26amp; Parcover, 1998). These assessments typically include: interest inventories, cognitive ability tests, and personality assessments.

  • How can I make a career change to HR Generalist /Assistant from Administrative Assistant?

I have over 8 yrs. of experience in the Administrative field but, I'm burnt out with being an Admin. and I really want to change careers preferably to the HR field. How can I make a career change to HR Generalist /Assistant from Administrative Assistant?
It depends upon your company employee advancement planning for retention. Some will teach and train while others will look outside for those with specific credentials and training. Due to the increase in employer liability, most are looking for folks with degrees in this area and certification from the Society of Human Resource Management. I recommend checking out your company's advancement policies and possibly taking classes in HR maybe even online so as not to cramp your schedule.

How Do I Change My Career?

I've always been interested in having a career in the entertainment industry , either music or movies ....not as the artist ..but behind the scenes ...i.e make up artist , screen writer ......etc...doe's anyone know of any Schools In Canada (where I live ) or the USA where I can either do a correspondence course or get an %26quot;on the spot education%26quot; by being around that type of enviroment...or any workshops that teach you how to have a career in that type of industry.

Is it ever too late to change your career ?

I have mostly worked in the care industry , mainly because I really like working with my clients who are mentally challenged individuals , and because there is plenty of jobs in that area where I live.

However I have always deep in my heart had a love for the arts ...Music ..Theatre...Movies ...(my friends have been telling me for years that is right up my street as a career) Is it really too late to change careers at my age (late 40's) and how do I go about it ? ThanksHow Do I Change My Career?
It's never too late to change your career. Contact your local community college and see what they have to offer - this way, if you need to work until you complete a certificate degree or feel confident that you will be able to get a job in the field, you can. Volunteer with a local community drama/music organization (if you have one) to get some behind the scenes experience. Good Luck!!How Do I Change My Career?

I want to change my profession to teacher. How do I do this online?

I need to keep working during the day. I want to go to college under the TEACH GRANT. Are there any online schools utilizing the TEACH GRANT so I can change careers? Graduated HS. Went 4 years to trade school but they LOST my transcripts so I would be like a starting freshman. Any advice would be most helpful. Been wanting to teach for 16 years and now they have a grant that will pay for it. I want in on this. Any help, thanks.I want to change my profession to teacher. How do I do this online?
I don't know where you are located, but in California, you would have to earn a bachelor's degree before you can begin a teaching credential program. You can't substitute teach without a BA or BS either. Other states requirements are a little different, but they all require the BA degree. If you didn't get that degree from your trade school, start by trying to get that degree. If the trade school lost your transcripts, or more likely, never kept good records, then you will have to start over. While online schools don't carry the same status as brick and mortar universities, some universities offer many courses on-line. California State University East Bay (formerly Hayward) offers some degree options, though not all, online. It is a perfectly acceptable university as it is a part of the state university system. Chapman University in California and some of the State Universities offer teacher credentialing programs partially on-line. I know there is one that is exclusively online, but you will still need to do student teaching and meet with a professor. Look into the universities near you, you may be surprised that many of the courses are offered on-line and you could take the remainder as night courses. After you finish your BA or BS, you'll need to enroll in a credentialing program. These take one year in California. Financial aid, grants and loans are usually made available on a financial need basis, so you may qualify for assistance. Talk to an adviser and try to plan out your course work before you begin. It will save you time and money.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your career change!I want to change my profession to teacher. How do I do this online?
Hi, don't you have your degree with your transcript from your trade school. You could use that just make a copy of your transcript, and send it to the school of choice, just let the school know that they lost your transcript but you have copy's. Hope this help.

BeverlyI want to change my profession to teacher. How do I do this online?
Honestly, online schools are not given much credibility during the hiring process at most schools, and they may not even be acceptable institutions for the Teach Grant program. As you know, the school you enroll in also must have chosen to participate in the program. Maybe I'm biased, but I can't even imagine an online program being very good at teacher prep.

You might want to look into a teaching fellows program, since you already have work experience. Most major cities (NY, DC, Philly, Chi) have such programs in place, and you receive on-the-job training and support, plus you might be elegible for grants too. I can't vouch for their quality or success though.

Your best bet is to start college over (%26quot;lost transcripts%26quot;...really??), maybe at the community college level, which offers more night-time courses so you can still work during the day. However, going part time will take you longer. The 3rd and 4th years of college will be tough; you may have to bite the bullet and transfer to a college/university where you will attend full-time during the day. At that point, you'll want to be done with college quickly anyway.

Also, you will have to commit to teaching in an underserved community, which means working with poverty, class, substance abuse, violence and racial issues. Think very carefully about making this career change: if you don't examine it from all possible angles, good and bad, you will end up making another career change down the road. You're not 22 anymore (I'm assuming), it's a lot harder to teach now than it was 10 or 20 years ago, and you *will* be given the most difficult population to serve in the most difficult circumstances. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, but there are some very real facts you need to consider.I want to change my profession to teacher. How do I do this online?
Grand Canyon University has a very good online program and is known for its college of education. My friend works there for their online college of education (which has been rated top 10 in the nation for several years) and he enrolled me, he can also send you all the links and everything for the TEACH grant. You can either call him at 1-877-547-2134 or e-mail him at mbanks@online.gcu.edu and he can not only e-mail you a ton of info but can also get you set up with a FA advisor to go over the TEACH stuff with you. Good luck

When my boyfriend and his ex-wife got a divorce he was making a good deal of money. Now he has changed careers and isnt making as much as before. When they got divorced child support took his wages and calculated his child support payments. Now that he is making less she is taking more than half his check because the amount hasnt changed. I looked at Colorados Family Support website and just cant seem to find out how to get all this changed for him. Does anyone know? How can you change the amount of child support you pay due to change of career?
He needs to go talk to the Child Support office. I know that in Texas, they review the case files every few years. My ex-husband and I were both subpoenaed to court because they'd reviewed the files and wanted to change the amounts. We were both happy the way things were, so it was noted and we moved on. But depending on his situation he needs to be prepared for possible court costs, especially if his ex wants to dispute the changes. How can you change the amount of child support you pay due to change of career?

Only the judge can make that change and if he wants that change he should take the matter back into court (spend money for his attorney to represent him, and that will probably cost a pretty penny). You say he has changed careers so I'd suspect that the judge would ask why that was. And why he hasn't taken a second job to pay for the other part of the money he owed. You know, of course, if he doesn't live up to the court order he will go to jail, don't you? So I suggest he get a second job or start a business with the rest of his time and bring in that money. How to switch careers with limited experience?

I'm unhappy with my current career and would like to change careers. I have a few different interests, each with differing self experience but don't know how to convince prospective employers of my worth.

My biggest concern is that I have been working in my current industry for the last 7 years and dont think I can get a similar payrate to what I am getting now. I would most likely start at the bottom of the chain again in most industries. With a new morgage I cant afford to lose my current payrate. How to switch careers with limited experience?

What you are saying is you want to start as a new inexperienced employee in another industry but make (perhaps) as much as someone who has been there 7 years. This seems exceedingly unlikely.

Perhaps if you want to do this the first step to consider would be to get rid of your mortgage (sell your house) to give you the financial flexibility to make the career move.

Any former accountants who changed careers?

Hello, everyone. I am at a crosspoint in making major decision on whether I want to choose accounting as my career and breadwinner for the rest of my life. I would like to hear from people who used to be an accountant on why they changed their careers. I have few Qs.

    1. How was the real world of accounting different than what you learned in textbook and classroom in college?

    2. What made u leave the field of accounting and change your career?

    3. How do you determine whether you will succeed in accounting or not? Is it mostly based on how well you do in accounting program in college? Is there any other way to anticipate your performance?

Thanks in advance for any insights.Any former accountants who changed careers?
What you have learnt in the books forms the basis for practical work. In accounting field, there is a close link between the two. Accounts is all pervading and encompasses all walks of life and all types of business. It is better that you continue in the same profession !!Any former accountants who changed careers?
Stay away from accounting! Three (yes three) open court cases involving me and some%26quot;bad numbers%26quot; restrict me from saying anything further but believe it when I say accountants go crazy.Any former accountants who changed careers?
Well, I have a question for you - Are you happy being an accountant? (Obviously not, based on your post). Why not?

I'm an accountant doing litigation work and it's the most exciting and challenging work I've ever done. But, I have to tell you that I would change careers in a heart beat if I had to do tax work - for me that's just a snooze fest though I know CPAs who LOVE it.

So, my advice is to try out something different if you want to do so. There is a huge demand for accountants so if you decide to come back to the career it shouldn't be a problem for you. Otherwise, try to do something different in the accounting field other than whatever you're currently doing. Accounting is just like business - it's very broad so you can try different areas until you find something that keeps you challenged and Happy - Happy is the key word. :) Good luck!

Have you ever changed careers and had to start "at the bottom of the barrel?"?

I mean, when you change careers because you don't like/hate your job, and now you make much less money,and/or have to start all over. Did you willingly do it,knowing that you would make much less, but did it anyway? How did it all work out in the end?Was it worth it for YOU?(not what your friends and family thought of your decision).I know am not the only one in this situation. Thanks for your input friends!Have you ever changed careers and had to start %26quot;at the bottom of the barrel?%26quot;?
Yes, I changed careers - after 20 yrs.

And I am making more money, at the bottom

of the corporate ladder, than in my previous job after 20 yrs.

So, if you need a change - or the job is better suited

to your education - or just, because you want to...

Go do it - nothing to loose - lot's to gain.

Experience, new friends, maybe the perfect job and

    of course - more money.!

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!Have you ever changed careers and had to start %26quot;at the bottom of the barrel?%26quot;?
After more than a decade as an tecno droid, I decided I wanted to be an electrician. I started as an apprentice and learned massive amounts. My previous knowledge made it easier to advance faster. It was totally worth it.

I then had a much larger skill base for future jobs.

If your 'new' career is something your heart wants, you will excel at it and most likely be very prosperous in time.

    GO FOR IT ! ! !

    How to change career directions?

I still would like like to be in sometime of %26quot;service friendly%26quot; atmosphere but not customer service where I'm on the phones. How do I convince potential employers to give me a shot when my resume does not support these factors. How to change career directions?
You have been working for 15 years right? Are you financially independent now? Perhaps you should stop looking for a job and use your experience to explore much higher financial rewards. How to change career directions?
u need to go do a couple of course and change jobs to reflect that change. other than that, 15 years is the lenght of some careers and u can't honestly say that after a 'carrer' in telemarketing, u can convince potential emplyers that u could do something else.

  • Any advice on how to make a career change?

I am a social worker with a Master's degree and five years managerial experience in a health care setting. I want to change careers into something more creative such as writing, marketing, the arts, etc. Any advice on making the change and making my skills transferable to a different career?Any advice on how to make a career change?
I believe many of your skills will transfer... especially your communication skills. I'd create a list of your achievements over the years and that see what skills were demonstrated as a result. I'm sure you'll see how some can easily transfer... and you'll want to list those abilities on your resume. Most employers use electronic surveying of key words to get through resumes, so make sure you use those key words when you can.

Do you want a degree or a change in careers?

It's not worth getting a degree. It takes 4 to 6 years. You can change careers but expect it to be a lesser type of job. Most employers don't hire old people unless they are changing to similar careers..

My Auntie who is about 50+ tried for 6 months to get a better job. She eventually found one but only because it was similar to what she was doing before - the pay was better but the hours were more also.

You can do a part time night school if you specifically want that degree. Better to just update your skills with short courses. Shourt courses count as education, too..

Woman looking to change career paths, but needs to go to college. how do i pay for living expenses?

I am a young, energetic 51 year old looking to change careers. I have worked in design and constuction estimating my whole life. I went to college for three years and I am bored and need a change of pace. I have an interest in the medical field, yet I need to go to attain a degree to pursue my interest. Unfortunately, I also have to pay for living expenses on top of my tuition. Are there any grants or scholarships that I qualify for? Any ideas would be great! Thanks!Woman looking to change career paths, but needs to go to college. how do i pay for living expenses?
There are probably not any grants out there. However, there might be some scholarships for it. Working tends to penalize the student to qualify for government grants. My brother got his MBA via student loans. I know of some nursing scholarships though, but medical field is pretty broad. However, your best option probably at this point is to attend the local community college where the tuition is cheaper and also has a wide range of opportunities in the medical field. I will include some information below. Good luck!

How do I re-create my resume after a career change?

I've recently made the decision to change careers and become a teacher. I'm looking at my resume and much of my job experience has been in management. How do I make my past experience relevant when I'm applying to teaching jobs? How do I re-create my resume after a career change?
First look for transferable skills - and management offers PLENTY of them (training/teaching, setting goals, driving change - in processes and people, etc)

Look into certification needs in your state. Something that is pretty popular in my neck of the woods (Midwest) is a career changer recruitment push - the schools actually hire you with no certificate but you have to obtain one in ~1 year. See if your area offers the same thing to make the transition easier.

Good luck! How do I re-create my resume after a career change?
I know a few people who moved from banking into teaching, so management into teaching can't be that far off. You could consider a few approaches:

    1) Put an objective on the top of your resume, articulating that you are seeking to shift careers into teaching, using skills you've learned in the corporate world.

    2) Try a functional resume format. Google for examples. This style allows you to emphasize your skills, supported by work experience, rather than emphasizing the employers / work experiences directly. Relevant skills might be leadership, organization, people skills, etc.

    3) Go take the educational courses required to be certified as a teacher. Assuming you already have a Bachelor's degree, you won't need to take too many more classes. And you can list that coursework at the top of your resume, which will show your desire to switch courses.

    Good luck!!

Find a company that does presentations. If you want to speak to abused women or women that need a career change, then go for the companies that do that kind of work.

Check out the yellow pages for companies that do work in that field...then call to find out what they require from speakers....%26amp; what you need to do to become a speaker.

  • How should I write a resume for a career change?

i want to change careers, from social work to teaching special education. How should I write a resume for a career change?
Write what is known as a %26quot;functional resume%26quot;.

So obviously put contact details first as usual.

Under that, put an %26quot;Objective%26quot; or %26quot;Personal Statement%26quot; outlining what area you'd like to move into and why, and why your past experience is relevant (make this brief - not more than four or five sentences).

Then put %26quot;Key Skills%26quot; (or something like that) and bullet point all experiences you've had that are particularly relevant to the jobs that you're applying to now.

Then list your work experience and education the way you normally would. How should I write a resume for a career change?
Focus on all of the educationl projects you have done, such as patient teaching, patient education, seminars taught, staff training, community health, special projects, working with disabled or homeless (special populations).

Aloha. How should I write a resume for a career change?
A Resume/CV must ONLY contain your educational and employment history.

If if contains a Personal Statement/Objective it will go STRAIGHT in the rubbish bin - regardless of how well qualified and/or experienced the applicant is.

How did you change your career?

I used to work in education and have been finding it really hard to switch to a different field even though I am prepared to start from the bottom and work my way up. I am prepared for massive pay cuts but noone seems to want to hire me.

Is it even possible to change careers? Do you know anyone who did it and how they managed to succeed?

Thank you.How did you change your career?
What are you trying to switch to? That may be the problem. teaching is very specific so your qualifications most likely do not apply to any other jobs. Depending on what you want to get into, you should most likely get some additional training (take courses, get certifications) in order to make yourself more attractive to potential employers

I am 46 and HAD to make a change...I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease after working construction for over 20 years. I was forced out of my job and up in the air for almost two years. I finally received SSDI but believe me that does not pay the bills. I went through the state's Voc. Rehab. program and they could not help.

So now I make some money with a website and help people any way I can. It does not pay well......but I am still above water. Some of the suggestions above were good....computers.....when I first got one I did not even know how to turn it on....but now I am pretty comfortable with them.

It's never easy to do something different, at any age. That's not to say he can't though. But no one is just going to hire him because he wants a change. He has to have something to offer. Some skills or personality trait that's saleable.

At 45 I decided I could not take it anymore. I bought all the books I could find on Computer building, repair, and Windows Operating System. When I finished reading, I built my own computer and installed windows and software. Then I tried successfully to cause problems with the computer. When I was able to fix what I caused. I spread around work that I was a computer genesis. I said I charge $50 an hour and guarantee my work. If it isn't fixed you get your money back. After about 6 months by word of mouth I was making almost the same amount of money I was earning from the company. I quit and did computers full time. My specialty was people and small businesses. How can I change my career this late in life?

I'm 48, and I've been either a paralegal or administrative assistant for nearly 30 years. Neither job is terribly fulfilling for someone with my intellect or creative capacities. I'm struggling to get some of my stories published, but not much luck so far. I want to change careers to something where I can use my brain and be creative, not sit behind a desk and push papers. Any ideas? How can I change my career this late in life?
The Sky's the Limit.. 48 is young (not as young as I am - lol)

but young. What do love doing? For me it's Photography, so at 43 I started my own Photography business, complete with a line of greeting cards. I would say, figure out what you love to do, something that you can make a living at, then go for it. We only live once, and if we do it right, once is enough.

Good LuckHow can I change my career this late in life?
I'd say Marketing is likely a good way for you to go. It may not pay as well as you'd like to start, but Marketing is a great way to flex your creative muscles in a way where you can still make a living at it. I've found that the stimulation I get from doing creative marketing work helps me come up with ideas for fiction ideas that I've developed. I've never had anything published mind you, but that's more because I haven't submitted anything than it is anything else :)How can I change my career this late in life?
Since you indicate that you're a writer, why not start off with freelance writing? With your legal and administrative background, there are plenty of jobs advertised on freelance sites looking for people to write columns, business letters, and other professional correspondences. As you build up a client list, you could branch out into other, more creative freelance gigs.

Another suggestion is to start taking some night courses at a local community college to flex your creative muscles and dip your toe into the career pool, especially if you feel that you might not have the %26quot;experience%26quot; to break into a creative field like marketing, advertising or PR. Try taking a creative writing class or a graphic design class something like that. In any case, you'd get to meet a community of writers, share ideas with them and network.

Below is the link to the Texan Nursing Association and in particular the chapter in Houston ~ they have all the answers would ever want.

All the best to youI%26039;m 24 changing careers to nursing in houston tx, how to I start?
If you have a previous baccalaureate degree you should look for an %26quot;accelerater BSN%26quot; or %26quot;post baccalaureate BSN%26quot; program. All you need is the nursing courses (you might need pre-reqs like anatomy %26amp; physiology if you haven't taken it recently). You could finish in about 2 years and have your BSN, which earns you the right to sit for RN examination and licensure.

You then would need at least a year or two of work experience in whatever specialty area you are looking to focus in as an NP - pediatrics, adult health, neonatology, geriatrics, family health, etc. This work experience is required for entry into NP / master's degree programs. A master's will take you another 2-3 years and then you can be eligible for NP certification.

As for other certifications, the basics any nurse needs is health professional CPR, ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) is good to have but not all RNs need it for their specific job. If you work 2 years in a specialty area, there are certifications offered which show you are especially competent in that specialty, for example, you could be an RN-C in in-patient obstetrics, or pediatrics, or critical care, or psych, etc.

I just applied for my Public Health Nurse certification, which any RN with a Bachelor's degree can get pretty easily.I%26039;m 24 changing careers to nursing in houston tx, how to I start?
Go checkout your local community college. I think that's your best bet because its faster and cheaper to become a nurse with an Associate's Degree that you can get at community college. However, I'm not exactly sure how they do it there in Houston, but here in Los Angeles, you have to start by taking the pre-requisite courses such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, english 101, etc.. Then after that you apply to nursing schools where most would have a waiting list. A lot of schools here do a lottery because there are so many applicants. So you get in on a basis of luck, not so much on grades because all you need is like a 2.7 GPA on the pre-reqs. But it all depends on how the colleges do it because I have a friend in New Jersey that got into a nursing program that didn't require him to take pre-requsite courses. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I am wanting to switch careers after working in IT Development the last 10 years. I am burned out and need change. I would like to get into a less hands on technical role and get into Management. I have an undergraduate degree in Information Systems and have pondered going back for my MBA. However, there are no guarantees this would help me find a better job. I don't mind staying within the Technology sector, but I just don't want to do development work anymore. Your comments are appreciated. How do you change career after 10 years in the same field?

    Will you change careers someday?

From what to what? How long will you wait to make the leap? How will you deal with changes in income or lifestyle? Will you change careers someday?
Very interesting question with a lot of absolutely worthless answers (I hope mine does not fall into that category).

To rephase your question, do you ever stop wondering what you want to be when you grow up? And I know that as I near retirement (5-10 years), the answer is No. I'm working on plans as I retire to start another career. I'm going to do some volunteer work to see if I really want to be involved in the new field.

I think most people will change jobs, however, changing careers will happen less. I differentiate between the two by saying that you grow a career and you work at a job. So you can make a career of interacting with the public or working with technology but have many jobs along the way that do that. Sometime you're able to make the move on your own and others are beyond your control as you are affected by takeovers, mergers, layoffs, etc.

I'm pretty conservative so I usually don't make a move until I already have a place to land if possible. I learned early in life that a lot of people get trapped in jobs that they don't care for by living a lifestyle that they don't want to give up. One of my first jobs were with people who didn't like their jobs but had gotten married, bought houses and cars and boats and couldn't afford to switch careers since the new income would not maintain their lifestyle. So why all those things are good to have, don't encumber yourself at too young an age if you want flexibility.

I would recommend reading %26quot;The Joy of Not Working%26quot; by Zelinski. I don't agree with everything he says but the book is thought provoking.

If you've been working in one persons house as a nanny rather than a nursery / playgroup, I think your first step has to be day care elsewhere. As a nanny in a house you've been more like a stay at home mum %26amp; so less employable. I think if you could get a job at a nursery %26amp; take on as much responsiblity as you can over the course of a year say that'd be your first step.

If you've already been working in a nursery then maybe you're aiming at jobs that are not related enough to what you've been doing. How about teaching foreign children english as a step away from just looking after children %26amp; a step abroad. Many of my friends have done this to get around.

Once you've made a 'jump' to a different work environment like this it should be easier to look at other jobs.

    a) abroad in particular you have an excellent opportunity to become multilingual if you get very involved %26amp; therefore can go to translating / tourist / hotel / senior school teacher / secretary / PR kind of options

or b) Staying in the same business moving up in the same school / holiday centre to a managerial position %26amp; then looking for managerial posts in other places playing on the organisation side of things to get different jobs.

Definitely getting better with the PC will be a big help as just browsing the internet for options allows you to look at so many more opportunities.

    Good luck!

Is 40 too old to change careers just because you're bored, and how does one go about it?

No, not at all. I am 39 and I hv changed career thrice and all the time with grand success. It is all on a person's judiciousness about time and money management. Is 40 too old to change careers just because you%26039;re bored, and how does one go about it?
    Not at all.

There was a good article in Money magazine last fall about this.

You want to look at what you're doing and what you want to do, as well as your demands (kids in college, house payments, medical circumstances) and your ambitions (buy a bigger house, have more kids, make more money or find more satisfaction). Knowing where you are and where you're going is 2/3s of it.

Getting there means looking at whether you need more education (I recommend the public school's outreach portions and private school's weekend classes, but not U of Phoenix), certain certifications (ie, series 7 securities certificate or teaching certificate), or just seed capital for a new business.

Also be sure to set up a reasonable timeline for yourself. If you need a degree, plan on taking 3 or 4 years, or more, and don't be frustrated - you are balancing a LOT of responsibility, and it needs to be done carefully.

Good luck!Is 40 too old to change careers just because you%26039;re bored, and how does one go about it?

It麓s hard work being self employed..but it麓s worth it.Is 40 too old to change careers just because you%26039;re bored, and how does one go about it?
I have experience in helping with career changes. Especially when the person making the change would prefer the freedom of self employment. The process is especially beneficial for people who still have their old job and can make a gradual change from their job into their new career. Incomes above $100,000 are possible within a two year period. The most valuable part is the ability to create a permanent and ongoing income. Most people could afford to leave their old job long before reaching the full income level. Want to no more? The advice is free. How hard is it for a someone with a masters degree in one field to go back to school to get a law degree? I am curious how many extra years of school it would take for someone to change their careers in that way.Required schooling to change careers?
Not difficult at all. It doesn't matter what field of study you have your degree in to go to law school.

Full time law school takes 3 years (can take 2 1/2 years if you go during the summer). Part-time law school takes 4 years.

Here's a list of ABA approved law schools:

A law degree in 3 years for the most part. You may be able to go to school year round and shorten that by one year, if the school you are attending offers the courses needed during a summer session.

Having a Masters already won't make it take any less time.

I have been teaching elementary school for 7 years and I feel that I am ready to change careers. Help?

I will be moving to Philadelphia in a few months and I am really considering a career change. I was thinking about becoming a paralegal to learn more about law and decided whether or not I would like to go to law school. How do I go about doing this?? Can I take a quick paralegal course? What do I put on my resume, all I have done is teach which is not really relevant to a paralegal position?? Any advice would be most appreciated! :)I have been teaching elementary school for 7 years and I feel that I am ready to change careers. Help?
Looks like you need a degree, or you can take a diploma/certificate program at a community college for a year if you already have a related degree.

For a career change, the best type of resume to use is a functional or combination style, rather than the typical chronological.

Although there are not huge similarities between teaching and paralegal work, you would be using your advising and assisting skills, and maintaining accurate records. Visit your local employment centre and talk to an employment counsellor there. They can advise you about updating your resume, and just in case you decide that paralegal work is not for you, they can administer an interest and aptitude test.

    Good luck

    Want to change careers? Desperately...How?

I started out of high school in customer service. Though I've had other office jobs, mostly customer service. I hate customer service. I want to change careers, but am drawn to customer service jobs. How do I stop this cycle/switch careers midway?Want to change careers? Desperately...How?
The first thing you want to do is decide on a chosen career. I did customer service for 35 years and loved every minute of it, I worked for Natural gas companies and did service work for the customer in their home. You get to meet interesting people from all walks of life, the filthy rich down to the poor down and outs. I would go to places where the average person cannot go like factories, it would fascinate me on how difference products are made, my favorite was the Coca Cola plant in Tampa and watch the bottles being filled and the house that the Miller Brewing Family owned in New Jersey.Want to change careers? Desperately...How?
You hate customer service but you're drawn towards it. I don't get it. Maybe just look for jobs in different places.Want to change careers? Desperately...How?
Well first of all what do you want to do instead? Do you have a dream job? Find a piece of paper and write what you want to be down or draw a picture of it. Hang that up where you can see it every day. Because if you want to change things, you have to be passanate about your dream and see yourself there. Try volenteering in the career field that you want to go into and network with those people. Take classes if you need to in that field so you can be more knowlegeable. It is very important to dress for sucess when you interviews as well.

Before you completely switch careers, research your interest in herbs and natural healing. Most cities offer classes at community colleges such as these in the evenings (I'm in Seattle and we have a magazine called Discover U. Web site www.discoveru.com) Also, look into volunteer opportunities in your field of interest. These are things that you can do to cement your interest in herbs and natural healing, familiarize yourself with people in the industry and build a resume towards your desired career while maintaining your current position (at least in the meantime so you can keep paying your bills!).

    Hi,

The most important thing to remember about job searches is that you should use a combination of methods regardless of your location.

Networking - Register at your local Unemployment Office (you don't need to be on unemployment to register for their assistance). They often will have networking groups on a regular basis. They also are a good source for the jobs that never show up in the paper or online.

Check your local paper -- In many cases the paper's classified are now online.

Search Smart Online -- If you don't have a lot of time, spend most of your time at sites that aggregate the job feeds from several job search engines. Prominently these include indeed.com and thingamajob.com.

Organization -- I use a free online application that allows you to track your ads, jobs you apply for, send or print mail merged correspondence, and track your job search history. This site is jobsearchlog.com

    Good Luck,

    Karen

How would you find out what your perfect career would be at 40? I hate Accounting and want to change careers.

Here is one thing you can do: plan to get paid for your talents. Sit down and list several things you enjoy doing (loving on pets) or are very good at (detail oriented and good with numbers). Then go back and think of how that can translate into a profession (veterinarian or vet's assistant responsible for completing files, invoicing, and billing). Then go back and think of the possible employers (Veterinarians). Then search the internet for them.

The other thing you can do, especially if you are struggling with the above, is go to www.analyzemycareer.com and pay for their assistance in finding your dream job.How would you find out what your perfect career would be at 40? I hate Accounting and want to change careers.
It would be worth the time and the money to sit down with a career counselor and have your resume done. You will be given personality tests and they will ask your likes and dislikes, goals, strengths and weaknesses. Then they can write your resume geared toward whatever your new career choice should be.

Good luck and enjoy whatever you change over to.How would you find out what your perfect career would be at 40? I hate Accounting and want to change careers.
The old adage really is true - do what you love if you want success and fulfillment. Think about what you really love to do and what jobs would allow you to do that. For instance, if your passion is planning and hosting parties, work towards becoming an event coordinator or wedding planner. If you love research and digging for answers, take courses to become a paralegal. Unfortunately, it's hard to just change careers without additional education and maintain the same income level, but if you're determined to do it, the payoff can be well worth the effort. How would you find out what your perfect career would be at 40? I hate Accounting and want to change careers.
    Have you considered teaching?

There is a need for math teachers and many states have programs set up for job changers to get certified to teach courses related to their prior fields.

Don't know that it would be %26quot;perfect%26quot; but it would be something different.

I want to Change Careers and Go Into Real Estate?

I live in California and want to know what the best route is? I am currently in the Administative Field. What are some good schools on the Los Angeles Area? Are On-line courses worth the cost? How do i step into the Real Estate world after graduation?

Thanks for the help :)I want to Change Careers and Go Into Real Estate?
You have certainly not received the answer you've been seeking yet, so let me provide it here:

    (1) Several real estate institutes exist in LA and licensing can even be obtained online. If you don't have any friends that are Realtors, go to http://www.trulia.com/voices/-Agent2Agent-42--- and ask other agents for recommendations (I'm in Austin, otherwise I would recommend a specific school).

    (2) After your courses to obtain your license, you will hang your license with a broker of your choosing. Be sure to interview with several- some offer a lower commission but higher marketing packages while other offer higher commissions but you're in charge of your own marketing. Some are teams, some are small brokerages, some are major and you'll have to speak with several to find your comfort zone.

    (3) Your new broker will typically help you into the lovely world of Real Estate, but for maximum exposure, I recommend doing as much networking with Realtors and with regular folks to not only learn about breaking into real estate but to get your name out there.

    (4) Certainly obtain your own website and begin blogging and get out there! http://agentgenius.com is a great place to learn about what Realtors are talking about amongst themselves!

The best advice I can give is to not be scared to make a friend in a local Realtor- everyone loves to be in the teacher position or mentor position, so take a Realtor to coffee to pick their brains! Good luck and feel free to email if you have any questions!I want to Change Careers and Go Into Real Estate?

You may want to start off by being an Assistant to an Agent or Investor. That way you can learn the process of buying and selling a home.

Even working at a mortgage company would give you the knowledge you need.

It is a lot of work to get started in REal Estate but it is worth it in the end!!!

Maybe you could find an Assistant/Receptionist position at a Property Management company. Work in the leasing office?...

If you have a degree in an area other than law then you can do the graduate diploma in law (GDL) lasting a year and costing around æ‹¢6,000. You will then have to spend another year doing the legal practice course (LPC) costing about æ‹¢8,000. If you do not have a degree then you will have to do a 3 year law degree and then your LPC. It's very expensive either way, but it's never too late! go for it!I am 40 yrs old; and i want to change careers and become a Lawyer in the UK. - is it too late for me to change

  • How can you change careers without going to school...?

I get so frustrated when I start to look for a new job, and with something as easy as Admin Asst. they want like 3 years of exp. How can I get the exp. if they aren't willing to give anyone a job to obtain that exp.?! UGH!!!How can you change careers without going to school...?
In today's business world, an Admin. Assistant job is far from easy. From phone calls, mailings, customer service, orders, etc it's a big responsibility. Hell, our receptionist is often up to her neck in work and NONE of it is easy.

Look for entry level positions that don't require experience. You can find something but it will take time and a willingness to start at the bottom. How can you change careers without going to school...?
Try going with a Temp Agency. I think it's a great way to experience many different types of businesses and opportunities. It gives you an opportunity to try on a position before you decide that's the place for you.How can you change careers without going to school...?
Have you ever thought of starting your own business? I know of an opportunity where you do not need any experience where you can have a business for your self but not be in business by yourself.

How do you want your life to be do you have big dreams? Are you prepared to work and are you coach able, do you like working with and helping people. If the answer is yes then get back to me either by email or through my 360 profile and I will give you a web address of something that might be suitable. How can you change careers without going to school...?
I remember going through the same frustration oh so many years ago. And you'll probably also find that you can't get any place to give you credit until you have established some credit history. So, what to do?

During your time away from the job, take an inventory of what it is you really like to do, not just for a job, but in life. Do you enjoy music more than the average bear? Are you a creative type of person who loves coming up with unique solutions to common problems? Think about it - hard.

Then, make a list of all of the different types of jobs there could possibly be. Don't limit yourself to what you see advertised in the newspaper. That is only the tip of the iceberg.

For each job, list the types of skills one would need in order to perform the job. Start matching up jobs with skills. You will find many skills overlap with several different jobs.

Pick a job that seems interesting to you and research it and the companies that use that type of employee What appeals to you about it? Is it the type of job you can do for 8 hours a day, go home and work on something else that gives you more satisfaction? Or is it a job that you can see yourself doing for quite some time? Either way, use what you have to get what you want. And always rememeber that perception is everything. If you think it is a royal pain in the rear to find a new job, then it will be.

Can someone give me some suggestions on how to change careers from an administrative assitant to..? I am stuck

Try pointing out how the skills you gained as an administrative assistant could be used towards a different career. That because of your job, you have gained experience dealing with people in many different types of work related situations. I wish that I could be of more help. You've got to just go for it.Can someone give me some suggestions on how to change careers from an administrative assitant to..? I am stuck
There are a number of things you can do. Is there an opportunity to learn new skills, or transfer within your current organisation.

If not, take night classes in order to develop new skills in an area that you want to work. Although challenging, you'll find it fun %26amp; rewarding.

Talk to your boss, or go into a careers office of some type %26amp; they will advise you on the best way forward.

All the best. Can someone give me some suggestions on how to change careers from an administrative assitant to..? I am stuck
You need a degree in something. Go back to school. Can someone give me some suggestions on how to change careers from an administrative assitant to..? I am stuck
I would suggest you get cross-training in another department or another position with your current employer. Once you've gotten training, volunteer to help out. Help, help, help until you can answer the same questions about the other job as the person you are helping. Then apply for the job or a similar one. The other advise is to take some evening classes in another field. Good luck.

Am i too old to change careers ?

I 'm 39 years old with a bachelor degree in computer science. I want to go back for bachelors in nursing. I already have a lot of student loans. I don't how i would afford it. Am i too old to be changing careers although i'm currently not in the computer field.Am i too old to change careers ?
You're never too old to change careers. However, taking on more student loan in this kind of environment isn't the best idea either to be candid.

You should think about these things first:

    1. Why do you want to change careers? Is there not enough openings in your current field? Are you burned out? Make sure your reasons for changing aren't just based around your *current* situation. That you really have a long-term desire for something more than what you have. You can always move to a better job market area (companies are REALLY needing people who are willing to relocate), and sometimes switching companies or taking on more challening tasks than cure burn out. Be sure you're switching for the right reasons

    2. Are you sure you want to be a nurse? Is it going to be work the extra school work? Do you know how many hours a nurse puts into the job; the hours, the responsibilities, the challenges? I'd suggest talking to a lot of nurses first. Ask them what they love and hate about their jobs.

If you really want something in the medical field, but don't want to spend the money for school, become a medical assistant instead! They do require training, but the school is half the time and half as cheep. And you don't have to deal with urine and blood all day either! Medical transcriptionists and medical assistants are in huge demand right now. So think carefully before you switch careers!

I'd recommend looking at your budget. If you're already deep in debt, going back to school to switch careers won't helo you. Use your computer science degree first! Computer careers are hot and pay well. Reduce some of that debt first and then go back to college.

You still have plenty of time! You're never too old to change your life. I read about a man who just got his MBA...and he was ninety-six!!!Am i too old to change careers ?
Getting into nursing is going to take 4-6 years if you go to a university, but maybe since you already have a BA, you might find better opportunities for you to change careers at a career college that specializes in nursing.Am i too old to change careers ?
You are never too old to pursue something that will make you happy!! As far as the student loans go, look at those as an investment in yourself for your future. Two degrees are better than none at all.Am i too old to change careers ?
No, but you will properly start from a lower Income Level...

How old is to old to change careers?

    It's never too late.

Find a job you enjoy and you will never work for another day.How old is to old to change careers?
Depends on the career I guess. The thing about changing careers is you probably want to be successful at it and enjoy it. Sometimes you don't truly enjoy something until you've been doing it for a while. So if you change careers too late, you won't get the fruits of your labor I guess. But at the same time, you'll at least being working towards something you enjoy. I talked to a guy in his 40s or 50s who really loved agriculture and wildlife but he worked at Lowes Home Improvement thinking it was too late to pursue that career. I told him it wasn't because while he might spend the majority of his life just getting acclimated to the career and not really having an influence on it, he would still be doing something he truly enjoyed. How old is to old to change careers?
There is not an age limitation. If you're unhappy with your job, find out where your strengths and passions lie. Then make the transition to a career that you will enjoy, even if it will temporarily set you back financially. Remember, money is replaceable, time is not.

How old is to old to change careers?
I know a few people who've gone to uni in their mid-late 40s and studied accountacy, law, interior design and medicine. They all finished their courses and started their new career. At a restaurant I worked in, a lady in her late 50s had finally gotten all her boys out of home and started a chef's apprenticeship! How old is to old to change careers?
    never.

I changed career about 6 times in 30 years.

I plan to start a tomato growing career when/if I get to 70. :)How old is to old to change careers?
You are NEVER to old to change careers!!! How old is to old to change careers?
Age should not be a barrier when looking to change careers. Quite often, a change will revitalise you and help you discover or develop new talents. Sometimes it helps overcome a feeling of getting nowhere in your present occupation. As the saying goes 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' . If you really desire a change then go for it. Good luck! How old is to old to change careers?
Well there is no simple answer.

Take moving into information technology. An accountant, or sales person moving into that area would actually have different careers in information technology.

Some work areas such as psychology, older people find it easier to get their first job that younger people. Would you rather be counselled by a 40 year old or a 22 year old?

Often your past knowledge and experience can be valuable in your new career. Many nurses move into Psychology, I knew a midwife who studied psychology and the local Materinity hospital created a job specifically for her because of her unique experience.

So choose carefully and know you are doing, often you are stepping down the pay scale and down the chain of command. If you can accept that you will often find you move up quickly compared with many of the younger starters because your experience and maturity.

I want to change careers. how can i go about becoming a medical lab tech?

i know that need college but is there a program less than six months that i can take to work in the lab or with them?

i need to work. i have alimony and joint custody of our kids(she lives about a mile from me in our house no less).

i need to find a program that i can do at home online while i continue to work and go to school.

any suggestions are welcome.I want to change careers. how can i go about becoming a medical lab tech?
well nowadays if you look, you can do almost anything online. i don't know where you live but, in nc you can get your associates in MLT from southwestern community college (near the mountains i think) mostly online provided you have a clinic or hospital that is accepted by the cc to do your labwork and clinical work. at winston-salem state you can get your bachelors in MT (as long you have your associates from an accredited school) online with the same lab requirements.

in MD you could try university of md university college they have bachelors in biotech and lab management as long as you have your associates degree from a school that has an articulation agreement with the school.

in DC try george washington university. they have a bachelors in CLS (as long as you have an associates) and a combined bachelors and masters. that university costs a lot.

you could try getting your MA certification online through somewhere like US career institute. if you use the correspondence option you could finish in 4-6 months. if you chose the all online option, you could finish in about 3 months.

make sure to check all accreditations. be sure that you can sit for the exams required by your state.

    hope this helps.

google online distance education programs for your state and check out the actual colleges in your area. start with the community/junior colleges and then check out the 4yr schools.I want to change careers. how can i go about becoming a medical lab tech?
There are 2 types of people who work in the lab: a medical lab TECHNOLOGIST (MT aka CLS): this person has a 4 year bachelors degree in science or med tech and has done a 1 year dedicated med tech training program. It is impossible to do online as they rotate through all the aspects of the clinical lab doing the lab work. You then take an exam by the ASCP and get licensed. There is no short cut to this field, as the hours %26amp; training are mandated.\\

Then there is their assistants, so to speak, who work under the MT. Medical lab TECHNICIANS (MLT). These people do the lower complexity testing and less critical things, as well as prepare samples. This makes less money %26amp; requires less schooling--usually a 2 year community college or vo-school training program (1-2 years). Again, it also can not be done on line. They also take an exam %26amp; are licensed.

You can google each to get far more info %26amp; lists of schools. The American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the testing body; states license them.

Some labs hire MAs to process specimens (limited training) but the income is small %26amp; the job is pretty basic.

Hey everyone. I have a Bachelors degree in Business. Major is Finance, Minor is computers. I have 10 years experience in the retail industry. I would like to pursue a career in computers now but don't know how to do it. There are degree programs in my area for Bachelors and Associate degrees. However, I already have a Bachelors. Should I go back anyway and get another degree? This can be expensive. Or, is there some place else I can start and further my experience in computers that is less timely and more cost effective? Career counselling is expensive and sometimes doesn't work. I am depending on Yahoo Answers for some thoughts. Any?Any advice for someone looking to change careers?

    As the old saying goes, %26quot;The world is your oyster.%26quot;

What are you waiting for? In this wonderful country of ours, pick-up the paper in any metropolitan area and go through the paper's employment/help wanted classified ads. OR go online and do the research for your area or the area you want to re-locate to/from and for the position [entry level or higher] you are seeking employment.

Granted, at the very least, you should take a refresher course. However, usually those you work with at your new position should be able to help you get over those initial learning bumps and humps.

    ABOVE ALL ELSE:

1] DON'T leave your present position by %26quot;burning your bridges%26quot; and quitting. You never know when you may have to go back to your former position.

2] Get hired for the new position first, then give proper notice at your present job. Leave on good terms OR do your best to try to leave on good terms.

    I wish you well.

How do you change careers when your older......?

I'm 51 years old and still lookin for a job. I've been in manufacturing for the past fourteen years and now all those jobs are either going out of business or moving to other countries.

You need to be certified to even mop floors nowadays. I'd like to find an entry level job but they are sort of difficult to find. Any ideas? How do you change careers when your older......?

    Hi Chris

I have empathy with you in that I have recently had a career review.I have a background in retail. With those skills I learnt I now do consultancy work and this has also given me a more time to start up on line business.

How about Franchising in a business that you might have an interest in? You might find your hobbies give you a good lead into a Franchise.

    Good luck whatever you do.

I want to change careers, but I'm not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?

I need to make a plan of action for myself, you know, go back to school, etc., but I have so many ideas on what I want to do. I was thinking teaching, social work or nursing, but I can't make up my mind.I want to change careers, but I%26039;m not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?
Okay, first of all, you need to consider money...teaching and social work don't make a great deal of money...you can make a great deal of money if you first of all get your RN and then specialize...some schools might even let you do a double major of like RN and Surgical Nursing...and you're out in 4 years...then get your master's in nursing...that's my plan...and nursing is a challenge, but not very time consuming....I would choose nursing...o, I forgot...my aunt works for the government as a probation/parole officer and she hates it.I want to change careers, but I%26039;m not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?
you need not to ask question.

the answer is within your reach.I want to change careers, but I%26039;m not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?
It sounds like you are interested in helping others, so you can't go wrong with any of the careers you've listed.

If money is somewhat of a concern, I would not recommend social work. From what I hear, social workers do not make much money.

    Good Luck!

Nursing would seem like a good career move. They are always in need and it pays wellI want to change careers, but I%26039;m not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?
Try to become a volunteer in some of the areas you are interested in - that way you get to see and feel what is involved in the job.

You'll soon learn which one give you the most pleasure and satisfaction.

It is easier then to go and do the training because you will know what you wan to do.I want to change careers, but I%26039;m not sure what I want to do. How can I figure this out?
The first thing you have to get clear in your mind is what sort of lifestyle you want, where you want to see yourself in 5,10 20 years time.

Once you have that clear in your mind, then you have to work out how you are going to achieve it.

For most people a large income is the one thing that would allow them to really do or be what they want. Unfortunately most people go out and get a job and the figures show that 95%of the people earn only 5% of the wealth which means that 5% earn 95% of the wealth, so how do you become one of the 5%?

Well you obviously like working with people, so why not think about getting people to work with you, note I said work with not for you, if they work for you they will want paying if they work with you they will create an income for themselves and at the same time help create an income for yourself. It is much better to get 1% from the efforts of 100 people than 100% of your own efforts.

So how do you do this, well for the average person there is one industry that stands out above all others and that is Networking, here you can develop your own network whilst helping others do the same, you are your own boss but you do not work alone, you will have team of leaders who will show and teach you how to become successful.

I could go on for very much longer and I know that there will be other replies decrying this idea, however I have spent 40 years in traditional jobs and it is only now that I can honestly say that I can see a fantastic future for my family and myself, don't wait like me to reach retirement, before you decide to change your life.
