I have worked as a beauty therapist for 6 years now and am looking to change into an office based position. Without any actual experience in office work, how could I do this?
I have a very good knowledge of reception / customer services. I can use a computer well, I can type ( not at like 100wpm but I can type!!) and I am fast to learn things. Also, the company I work for at the moment has a PR company as well as their spa, which I have done promotional and marketing work for.
I have had a lot of stick so far from recruiters because I am a therapist - they all seem to think that because I trained in that I should stick with that - and to be honest, it's getting a little irritating that people are shocked or confused that I might have gotten bored of beauty and want to try something else!
Bottom line is... How do I get the required experience if nobody will give me a chance in the first place? How do I change careers into an office?
Firstly, I'm the opposite - I've worked in an office for 5 years and would love to train up as a beauty therapist! lol.
You may have to start out as an office assistant or junior administrator which won't require as much experience. This would give you the option to work your way up once you have proved you are good at the job.
Or while you are still a beauty therapist, enrol at college to do a couple of courses such as word processing, CLAIT, touch typing or business administration. Then when you have got a qualification or 2 under your belt contact some recruitment agencies who will then search for suitable positions for you.
The fact you have been willing to learn new skills for an office based job will look great on your CV xxHow do I change careers into an office?
Try employment agencies such as Manpower and Kelly Services. Okay, the pay is not good and the assignments often temporary (although that means if the job is pants, at least you know it's not forever). A lot of companies take on permanent office staff if they've been impressed by their performance in a temping role. How do I change careers into an office?
