Teachers: How do I change careers-Is it even possible after 15 years? !!?

I've been teaching for over 15 years. I'm divorced and pay child support. I can barely save 100.00/month and have wanted to return to school for the past 8 years. My divorce took everything I had; My home, savings, half of my retirement, and now almost half of my net income each month. Has anyone out there been in a similar circumstance and managed to change careers? I'm 38 and would like to work in design. I have skills as a 3D artist but I have only a few months of training with 3D art. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who taught at one time, found it to be as disappointing as I have and was successful changing to something more %26quot;rewarding%26quot;.Teachers: How do I change careers-Is it even possible after 15 years? !!?
There are worse things that working at a job you do not enjoy but I can't name any. IMO it is never too late to change careers. Can't be any worse than what you face now. Give it a shot. This may sound cold but I really feel sorry for you, caught in a system designed to break you down. Good Luck!!Teachers: How do I change careers-Is it even possible after 15 years? !!?
This is the exact reason why I ALWAYS discourage my students from being teachers. It may seem cool and altruistic to a high school student, but in cold reality, a person with an education degree is severely limited in their options. It is much easier for somebody with a content area degree to become a teacher, if they want, than for somebody with a teaching degree to get a job in their content area.

With very few exceptions, degrees in education are looked on as not really being degrees in the same sense as, say, a degree in English, or Physics, or Engineering (my degree) is. And NOBODY except education majors considers graduate degrees in Education or %26quot;educational research%26quot; to be anything more than fluff.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, and I hope you find something. Maybe Art won't be such a stickler for a degree at all! A good resume and an even better portfolio may very well be enough to get you out of the soup!
