Any former accountants who changed careers?

Hello, everyone. I am at a crosspoint in making major decision on whether I want to choose accounting as my career and breadwinner for the rest of my life. I would like to hear from people who used to be an accountant on why they changed their careers. I have few Qs.

1. How was the real world of accounting different than what you learned in textbook and classroom in college?

2. What made u leave the field of accounting and change your career?

3. How do you determine whether you will succeed in accounting or not? Is it mostly based on how well you do in accounting program in college? Is there any other way to anticipate your performance?

What you have learnt in the books forms the basis for practical work. In accounting field, there is a close link between the two. Accounts is all pervading and encompasses all walks of life and all types of business. It is better that you continue in the same profession !!Any former accountants who changed careers?

Well, I have a question for you - Are you happy being an accountant? (Obviously not, based on your post). Why not?



I'm an accountant doing litigation work and it's the most exciting and challenging work I've ever done. But, I have to tell you that I would change careers in a heart beat if I had to do tax work - for me that's just a snooze fest though I know CPAs who LOVE it.



So, my advice is to try out something different if you want to do so. There is a huge demand for accountants so if you decide to come back to the career it shouldn't be a problem for you. Otherwise, try to do something different in the accounting field other than whatever you're currently doing. Accounting is just like business - it's very broad so you can try different areas until you find something that keeps you challenged and Happy - Happy is the key word. :) Good luck!
