I used to work in education and have been finding it really hard to switch to a different field even though I am prepared to start from the bottom and work my way up. I am prepared for massive pay cuts but noone seems to want to hire me.
Is it even possible to change careers? Do you know anyone who did it and how they managed to succeed?

What are you trying to switch to? That may be the problem. teaching is very specific so your qualifications most likely do not apply to any other jobs. Depending on what you want to get into, you should most likely get some additional training (take courses, get certifications) in order to make yourself more attractive to potential employers
