How old is too old to change careers?

At age 39 I am wanting to change my career to maybe go into nursing or computers such as IT or programming. Is this too late to start. I have read some articles that starting a career in your 40's or later is hard to do is that true? How old is too old to change careers?
Not at all hard!

Now that being said there is one thing really to consider and that is, how many productive years does a person have ahead of them, and are they enough to allow you to enjoy the fruit of your labor?

2 must read books, %26quot;Do What you love and the Money will follow%26quot; Marsha Steiner (Name sp?) and %26quot;Transitions%26quot; by Bill (William) Last name escapes me right now. However Google those two books and you have enough of the name. Ebay or 1/2.com for around $5.00-9.00 on those. (My Guess)

What Marsha Steiner and Bill ? both advocate is making a responsible change and you already have many skills that can help you transits. The Governor of California is a good example of transitions, Body Builder - to Action Actor - to Politics.

If you are 80 and planning on going back to school and starting at ground zero and becoming an MD, Will you have enough years ahead of you to enjoy the result of all that work; however the joinery may be the goal.

What is a %26quot;Career%26quot; I am in my 50's and just now getting a chance to finish a college degree, additionally I had wanted to study with a certain martial Arts Master and therefore, took care of business where I lived, moved 1500 miles, and took it from there, and that was when I was 50.

Money has not been a problem. I have sufficient income to get by. I also live a very non-extravagant lifestyle too.

What you may find is a connection between what you are now doing and the field you want to head into, and that may make the transition much smoother, and as you progress old skills will help and you aquire new ones in the process.

You are welcome to email me for those book names.

Summary:

I do what I love. I know nothing about a career as far as %26quot;Doing something I dislike long enough to retire and not do it anymore and then tell people %26quot;I spent my whole life doing what I hated, and now my life is almost over!

Nursing may be hard only because of the strenuous nature of the job itself. But computers would be great. You are never to old. You still have 27 years of work before retirement age. Go for it.How old is too old to change careers?
Never, if you have the will and the determination to succeedHow old is too old to change careers?
never - with a work field where some people are working into their 60's - you could enjoy 20 years in a new field.

it probably won't be as easy as when you were in your 20's but no problem. i changed careers in my 30's from corporate management and running a successful business to law enforcement because i was interested in helping and contributing to my community.

it wasn't easy - but five years later i sure am happy.

go for it! and don't listen to naysayers. you can do anything you want - and i would recommend nursing. high demand and great pay and you could work anywhere - from hawaii to yellowstone - every community needs nurses. How old is too old to change careers?
My wife did much the same thing. She just turned 50 and is pursuing a double bachelors in the IT field. Approaching %26quot;Middle Age%26quot; can be a challenge, by this time, we've already done all the foolish stuff. So, it's time to do for ourselves. All of our children are grown, now we can concentrate on studies. How old is too old to change careers?
It's never too old to change careers. There are, however, some challenges presented by starting in a new career without any experience, but that is a challenge for anybody doing so. Nursing is a hot profession and one where good people are always needed. It will be a adjustment since the work hours for nurses tend to be a little different from the stand 8 hour business day for most of us. Going into the IT profession may be a little harder since the field is somewhat saturated.

Having said all of this...go for it!!!! Make the change. You can always fall back on your current experience if it doesn't work out. Moreover, I am assuming you will need some training so you will probably get a better idea if the new career is really to your liking while you get the training.

Remember, you are never to old to follow your dreams or make positive changes in your life.
