Below is a link to a website that should answer all your questions. As you already have a Bachelor's Degree maybe you can just take the medical courses needed such as Anatomy %26amp; Physiology, Medical Terminology, et al. With a minimum of training maybe you can get a job as a Physical Therapist (PT) assistant. You could definitely take med terminology at night. Best of luck and hope you go through with it as if you must work, might as well be happy. How long would it take to change careers to become a physical therapist?
If you didn't take some of these cousres in your BS program, you will most likely need to go back and complete the prerequisite coures. It varies from school to school, but ususaly involves a year of chem and physics, 3 semesters of bio, 1-3 of psych, stats, trig, anatomy and physiology (you will most likely take gross human anatomy in the professional phase of the program). Worst case scenario, it will take you 2-3 years to complete these before you can apply to the program
The programs have a competitive entry policy, meaning just because you meet the minimum standards does not guarantee admission, but once in the program it is usually an additional 3 years resulting in either a master's or doctorate level degree.
Since you already have a BS, my guess is that it will take you 5-6 years at the most.
Your other consideration is a physical therapy assistant program...you could probably enter it right away, but your earning potential is much less...almost half...and it really isn't a stepping stone to the PT degree. Yet, it is only a two year degree.
Most PT programs are done in full-time day format in a very regimented program. There is usually no time for a part-time job...but many have been known to pull it off. Without any formal expeience, you could apply for a job as a PT technician which typically pays about $10-14 and hour.
My best suggestion for you would be to go to the educational programs section of the APTA to review a couple prospective programs. go to www.apta.org
