Is it possible to change careers in this economy?

I've been working as a Interior designer for over 9 years and I hate it! My passion is to work in a non-profit organization working with teen mothers. I've tried to volunteer but these places don't seem to need the help because they don't call back or respond to the emails. How do I go about changing my career? Do I need to go back to school? I just need a little advice-thanks!Is it possible to change careers in this economy?
This isn't quite what you asked, but I'm going out on a limb and I suggest that you take an aptitude test. An aptitude test assesses your skills and your interests and matches you to the careers that are right for you. A high school or college adviser can recommend a good one. Failing that, go to the workforce development agency (unemployment) and request one. JobFit and Work Keys are excellent.

This way you can really see if working with a non profit teen mothers is really what you want. Many nonprofits need volunteers; perhaps the one you contacted isn't as needy as most. Also, many non profits need specific help (I work for a food pantry; we use lots of regular help, but truly need clerical computer help). Go and visit the place in person; talk to the director (our pantry is 100% volunteer, so for us, you might have to make a couple of trips to get with the right person for the interview and since most of us have regular jobs and volunteer, it is sometimes a little harder too).

I changed careers in my 50's. I changed in the midst of this economic downturn. I love my new career (and extra time to volunteer); however, I make 75% less than I did a few years ago. And yes, I went back to school for this opportunity.

If this could be a concern for you, perhaps you could take your talent for interior design and help the shelter re-do it's housing. Or perhaps you could 'raffle' off your talent and donate the $$ to the shelter. The need is great; the opportunites are endless. Is it possible to change careers in this economy?

Most NPOs will take volunteers, but they might prefer a face to face meeting. Have you tried walking in and visiting with the volunteer coordinator?

Regarding your question about education, there are degrees in public administration which would be helpful. So many places don't care what your degree is, just that you have a degree.

This is a weak answer. Do you mind telling us where you live? I might be able to help you a bit more with that information. Is it possible to change careers in this economy?
Yeah it's possible, but the chances are highly unlikely.

Returning to school wouldn't hurt. As they say, you learn something new everyday. Plus, when/if the economy improves, you'll have more pillows (degrees) to land on when searching for a job.

However, I will say this, if you have enough money saved up, this is a great time to start your own business. If you give it some tender loving care and use a little pateience, you can make quite a bit of money from it %26amp; enjoy the experience.
