How can a 50 year old make a career change without going back to school?

My husband is turning 50 and works in a plant. Hard work, long hours and a bad environment are taking it's toll on him physically. We'd love for him to change careers but going to school isn't an option. His schedule doesn't allow for it and we don't have the funds. But if he doesn't do something, he won't make it to retirement. Any ideas?How can a 50 year old make a career change without going back to school?
I am 46 and HAD to make a change...I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease after working construction for over 20 years. I was forced out of my job and up in the air for almost two years. I finally received SSDI but believe me that does not pay the bills. I went through the state's Voc. Rehab. program and they could not help.

So now I make some money with a website and help people any way I can. It does not pay well......but I am still above water. Some of the suggestions above were good....computers.....when I first got one I did not even know how to turn it on....but now I am pretty comfortable with them.

It's never easy to do something different, at any age. That's not to say he can't though. But no one is just going to hire him because he wants a change. He has to have something to offer. Some skills or personality trait that's saleable.

At 45 I decided I could not take it anymore. I bought all the books I could find on Computer building, repair, and Windows Operating System. When I finished reading, I built my own computer and installed windows and software. Then I tried successfully to cause problems with the computer. When I was able to fix what I caused. I spread around work that I was a computer genesis. I said I charge $50 an hour and guarantee my work. If it isn't fixed you get your money back. After about 6 months by word of mouth I was making almost the same amount of money I was earning from the company. I quit and did computers full time. My specialty was people and small businesses. You know the kind. The business that knows it needs a computer but after that they are lost. Best Buy recommends the most expensive machine and software. But what the need is a basic computer, all in one printer, and MS Works.
