What Hi-tech Careers are available and how to enter them?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at changing careers from IT technician to something more indepth and hi-tech i.e. sat comms, etc. and I was wondering what hi-tech careers were out there, preferrably something that doesn't require a degree (though I could do this, as I have A-levels).

Also, how would I enter that field?

If you want more 'in-depth' then the way to go is to university and get a degree in electronics or communications engineering.

Without it you will not get an in-depth and interesting job.

If you are prepared to do it approach the larger companys that offer technician training - they may take you on as a trainer - but depends on your age and if you will take the initial pay cut?

Other options which you could consider are mobile phone repairs - boring!!, broadcast engineering - difficult to get into and you would be in competition with degree engineers and thiose with a psaaion for the industry.

How to enter - register you Cv on the job boards, look at adverts in the technical journals

As you are already in the appropriate industry - IT technician - start doing some networking.

Ask around any business contacts you have.

Do you take an IT magazine? This should give you some leads.

Look in a quality newspaper (broadsheet) and see what is on offer.

Go to your local library to see if they have any other publications available.

Look on the shelves at WH Smith.

In general, start working from you end, putting yourself about and using what contacts you already have.

It is good that you are prepared to study for a degree. this should look good on any CV you produce. It indicates good intent.

Best of luck. Jo.
